September is National Preparedness Month: Are You Ready for a Disaster?

As we enter September, we want to highlight the importance of being prepared for disasters. National Preparedness Month serves as a timely reminder to evaluate and enhance our readiness for unexpected events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes. These emergencies can occur with little or no warning, so having a solid plan in place is crucial.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) provides helpful guidelines for creating an effective emergency plan. Here are some key questions to consider when preparing:

  • How will I receive emergency alerts and warnings?
  • What is my shelter plan?
  • What is my evacuation route?
  • What is my household communication plan?
  • Do I need to update my emergency preparedness kit?
It’s important to tailor your plan to your household’s specific needs and to practice it with your family members. While these tips are essential for home safety, remember that emergencies can also occur at work or while traveling. For additional information and resources on how to prepare for emergencies in all settings, visit FEMA’s website at Ready.gov.

Taking these steps now will help ensure that you and your loved ones are well-prepared should an emergency arise.

Don’t Forget About the 988 Mental Health Crisis Hotline

Today we want to share some important information about the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which was launched nationwide in July 2022. Much like how dialing 911 connects individuals to emergency services for medical crises, 988 provides a crucial support system for those in emotional distress or facing a suicidal crisis. By calling or texting 988, individuals can reach trained counselors who are available to listen, offer support, and connect them to necessary resources.

Since its launch, counselors have handled over 10 million calls, texts, and chats, providing immediate and accessible care to people experiencing mental health-related distress, including thoughts of suicide, mental health or substance use crises, and other emotional struggles. Despite this significant outreach, a recent poll revealed that only 23% of Americans are somewhat familiar with the 988 service.

It is vital that we continue to spread awareness about 988 and ensure that everyone knows it is available for those in need. Remember, 988 is not only for individuals in crisis but also for those who are concerned about a loved one who may require immediate support.

Thank you for helping us raise awareness and provide this critical information to those who may benefit from it.

Staying cool and having fun this summer!

At Aveyron, our clients are making the most of the warm weather with all kinds of exciting activities, and our incredible staff are going above and beyond to help them experience everything the area has to offer.

Whether it’s heading out for a day of bowling with Don, Sam, and Jeff and catching the latest flicks at Marcus Theater (with all the best snacks, of course!), grabbing a cold treat from Below Zero with Aaron, or enjoying the fresh air and beautiful scenery at the Arboretum with Lucas, and feeding goats at the sanctuary with Teri and Becky, there’s always something fun to do.

For those who love wildlife, the National Eagle Center in Wabasha, MN has been a huge hit with Caroline and other clients, offering a chance to see majestic eagles up close and learn about their conservation.

We’re so proud of the opportunities our team creates to make every summer day a memorable one for our clients. From exploring nature to enjoying indoor activities, we’re making sure everyone stays cool, engaged, and entertained! 😎

Here’s to more fun-filled adventures and unforgettable memories this season!
